Its almost that time of the year again! Nerds, geeks, comic fans, pop culture fans, and the just plain curious gather to descend on the awesome madness that is San Diego Comic Con, and to pay homage to the comic/pop culture gods that be for four plus days. I have faithfully partaken of this since I moved to San Diego seven years ago, and this year will be the same. Say hello to my inner geeknerdness!
So, how do I celebrate and partake?
1.) I volunteer all four days for Comic Con, which is a pretty sweet deal. I get to help out one of the biggest events this side of the US coast for three hours everyday. In return, I get a free badge for the rest of the day 🙂 Nothing gets better than volunteering, I tell ya!
2.) I cosplay.
Cosplay? Huh? According to its Wikipedia entry:
Cosplay (コスプレ kosupure?), a portmanteau of the words costume play, is a performance art in which participants called cosplayers wear costumes and fashion accessories to represent a specific character or idea.
In other words, yours truly loves to dress up, put together costumes, and be someone else during Comic Con. I see it as another form of self-expression, and as a tribute to my favorite characters from anime, movies, tv shows, and comics that have made my life more enjoyable. Some years I go all-out, some years I don’t. Every year, I always make sure I do the best cosplay of that character that I can.
So who am I cosplaying this year?
1. Tina Belcher from Bob’s Burgers .
Definitely will be her on Friday July 10th as the Bob’s Burgers panel will be on that day.
2. Fionna , the female version of Finn from Adventure Time
Still vacillating on when I should be her: Thursday or Sunday?
3. Kiki, the young witch from Hayao Miyazaki’s film Kiki’s Delivery Service
Again, still deciding on when I should be her, Thursday, or Sunday.
4. Skipping Purge lady from the movie The Purge
This cosplay idea was actually from a good friend, so will be partner-cosplaying with her. If you are around the convention center on Saturday July 11, you will most likely see two ladies skipping around in this get-up.
Say hi if you see me in either or all of these costumes!
